About Mount Mulanje Conservation Trust (MMCT)

Established in 2000, the Mount Mulanje Conservation Trust (MMCT) supports the Department of Forestry, key local partner organizations, and neighboring village community groups in implementing the ecological management priorities of the Mulanje Mountain Forest Reserve (MMFR).

MMCT also promotes the sustainable management of Mount Mulanje’s natural resources to achieve community, conservation, and commerce goals that improve the livelihoods of communities within the Mount Mulanje Biosphere Reserve.

MMCT is seeking a dynamic and motivated Assistant Accountant to support the Finance and Administration Department. Operating under agreements with the Department of Forestry and various partner agencies, MMCT facilitates and implements biodiversity conservation, environmental management, and community development initiatives within the Mount Mulanje Biosphere Reserve (MMBR).

As MMCT continues implementing organizational reforms aimed at strengthening governance and management effectiveness, the successful candidate will play a key role in supporting these efforts.

Position Overview

This is a supervisory position.

The Assistant Accountant will directly supervise and coordinate the following staff:

  • Gardeners
  • Guards
  • Office Receptionist
  • Office Cleaner
  • Finance & Administration Intern

Job Purpose

The Assistant Accountant is responsible for supporting the Finance and Administration Department by maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring timely processing of financial transactions, assisting with financial reporting, budgeting, payroll administration, and ensuring compliance with statutory and organizational financial policies.

The role is essential in maintaining the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of financial information to support effective organizational decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

1. Financial Record Management

  • Record, process, and maintain accurate financial transactions using QuickBooks.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of all accounting entries.
  • Maintain proper filing and organization of financial records.

2. Accounts Payable and Receivable

  • Manage supplier and customer accounts.
  • Reconcile accounts payable and receivable regularly.
  • Process invoices, payments, and receipts within agreed timelines.

3. Bank and Cash Management

  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations.
  • Maintain and update cashbooks accurately and on time.

4. Financial Reporting

  • Assist in preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
  • Support preparation of financial data for analysis and decision-making.

5. Budgeting and Financial Planning

  • Assist in preparing annual budgets.
  • Monitor expenditure against approved budgets and report variances.

6. Payroll and Statutory Compliance

  • Process monthly payroll and generate payslips.
  • Prepare statutory returns, including PAYE, withholding tax, pension contributions, and other regulatory submissions.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable financial laws, regulations, and internal policies.

7. Audit Support

  • Provide required documentation during internal and external audits.
  • Assist auditors in verifying financial records and transactions.

8. Payment Processing

  • Ensure timely processing of payments in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Verify the accuracy and authorization of payment requests.

9. General Duties

  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Finance and Administration Manager.

Qualifications, Competencies and Experience

Applicants must possess:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2–3 years’ relevant experience in a similar position.
  • Proficiency in accounting software, particularly QuickBooks Online.
  • Strong numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • High level of integrity, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure with minimal supervision while maintaining high-quality results.
  • Strong teamwork, self-motivation, and honesty.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Part qualification with a recognized professional accounting body (ICAM or ACCA) will be an added advantage.
  • Membership with ICAM and MAB in good standing.
  • Proven human resource management, leadership, and motivational skills with strong organizational values.
