Job Purpose
To safely and efficiently operate an excavator in carrying out excavation, loading, trenching, earthmoving, and related civil engineering activities. The Excavator Operator is responsible for ensuring that all work is completed in accordance with project specifications, company procedures, the Employment Act, 2000 (as amended), the Occupational Safety, Health and Welfare Act (Cap. 55:01), and other applicable laws and regulations in Malawi.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate excavators for excavation, trenching, loading, backfilling, site clearing, and demolition works.
- Excavate foundations, drainage systems, culverts, borrow pits, and other earthworks according to engineering drawings and survey markings.
- Load excavated materials onto dump trucks and stockpile materials as instructed.
- Maintain excavation levels, slopes, and dimensions in accordance with project specifications.
- Work safely around underground utilities, existing infrastructure, and other site hazards.
- Conduct daily pre-start and post-operation inspections of the excavator.
- Check and maintain engine oil, hydraulic oil, coolant, fuel, tracks, bucket teeth, hoses, and other critical components.
- Report equipment defects, breakdowns, accidents, and unsafe conditions immediately to the supervisor.
- Maintain accurate equipment logbooks, fuel records, and daily production reports.
- Ensure efficient operation of the machine to minimise fuel consumption and unnecessary wear.
- Work closely with surveyors, engineers, supervisors, and other machine operators.
- Maintain a clean and serviceable machine at all times.
- Comply with company Health, Safety, Environment and Quality (HSEQ) policies and procedures.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Earthworks Foreman, Plant Supervisor, or Site Manager.
Qualifications & Experience
- Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or equivalent.
- Certificate in Heavy Equipment Operation (Excavator) from a recognised training institution.
- Valid Malawi Driver’s Licence (appropriate class for operating heavy equipment).
- First Aid or Occupational Safety and Health training will be an added advantage.
- Minimum of 3 years’ proven experience operating excavators on road construction, building construction, mining, or civil engineering projects.
- Experience operating different sizes and types of excavators.
- Experience working on projects funded by Government, development partners, or private contractors is an added advantage.
Knowledge and Skills
- Thorough understanding of excavation and earthmoving operations.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, survey pegs, and site instructions.
- Knowledge of safe excavation procedures and hazard identification.
- Basic mechanical knowledge for routine equipment inspections and preventive maintenance.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Good time management and commitment to quality work.
