Division: HIV Sero Molecular
Main purpose of the job:
- To perform phlebotomy on clinical trial participants at two Gauteng sites (Zola and Streford)
Location:- 1 Modderfontein Road, Sandringham
Key performance areas: - Ensure that all collection instruments and environments are sterile and safe for use
- Draw blood using correct instruments and containers
- Observe the physical condition of patients during blood/ specimen taking and apply sound nursing practices in order to ensure the safety and comfort of patients
- Ensure that correct name, date of birth and sex of patient, time of specimen collection is completed on the sample requisition form
- Label specimens (where relevant)
- Keep records of specimens collected and ensure that all patient details and clinical information is accurately recorded
- Prepare study patients’ kits a week in advance in accordance to the protocol schedule
- Order and maintain consumable stock/check expiry dates
- Monitor room temperature to ensure that kits and test reagents are kept within the acceptable temperature ranges
- Ensure shipment of specimens is in correct temperature and timeously
- Assist when possible with other nursing related duties within the clinic
- Prepare the tubes in correct order to prevent contamination
- Maintain hand washing techniques before and after each patient
- Maintain universal precautions- wear protective clothing & no re-sheathing of needles
- Adhering to medical waste disposal
- Active participation and attendance in meetings
Required minimum education and training: - Nursing Diploma / Phlebotomy Technician
Professional Body Registration:- Registered with HPCSA as a Phlebotomy Technician
- Registration with SANC as a Nurse
Required minimum work experience: - 1 years relevant experience as a Nurse in Phlebotomy
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:- Demonstrate knowledge of the purpose and safe use of all equipment used in the collection of all specimens
- Must be able to travel to facilities where blood collection is required
- Individual must have attention to detail and interpersonal skills
- Venepuncture skills on adults
- Ability to work independently, dependently and interdependently
- Accountability is of major importance
- Maintenance of confidentiality will be required
- Daily interaction with internal colleagues and external participants (patients) is required
- Must be customer service orientated
- Driver's license
