About the Role
The Electrical Plant Maintenance Superintendent will be responsible for managing all aspects of the Electrical Maintenance Department, including the maintenance of manufacturing electrical systems, departmental budgets, maintenance planning, statutory compliance, and the leadership of multiple shifts of Maintenance Supervisors and Electricians. The successful candidate will play a critical role in improving plant reliability, reducing downtime, ensuring compliance with electrical safety legislation, and supporting future plant development projects.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage the Electrical Maintenance Department across multiple shifts.
Supervise, coach, mentor, and develop Maintenance Supervisors and Electricians.
Plan, organise, lead, and control all electrical maintenance activities.
Develop and implement preventative and predictive maintenance strategies aligned with Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) principles.
Maximise equipment reliability, plant availability, and production efficiency.
Manage maintenance budgets, labour costs, purchasing, and electrical spares inventory.
Coordinate planned maintenance shutdowns and major plant maintenance activities.
Conduct performance evaluations and implement technical development plans for employees.
Drive Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and continuous improvement initiatives.
Support capital projects, equipment upgrades, and future production capacity expansions.
Ensure all electrical systems comply with applicable engineering standards, SABS requirements, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Ensure statutory inspections are completed accurately and within required timeframes.
Promote a strong safety culture through risk management, safety talks, and proactive hazard identification.
Liaise with production, engineering, contractors, and external service providers to ensure maintenance work is completed safely, efficiently, and on schedule.
Develop and maintain maintenance procedures, quality standards, and departmental operating practices.
Provide technical support, research, and engineering advice to improve plant performance and reliability.
Minimum Requirements
BSc or BTech Degree in Electrical Engineering or Qualified Electrician (Trade Test).
Minimum 10 years' post-qualification experience in electrical maintenance.
Minimum 5 years' experience in a maintenance management or supervisory leadership role.
Previous experience within a heavy manufacturing, processing, foundry, metals, mining, or industrial environment will be highly advantageous.
Safety Management and Risk Management experience.
Ability to provide contactable employment references.
Qualifications and certifications must be verifiable.
